About

TEDxRenfrewCollingwood is dedicated to discovering great ideas and sharing them with the rest of the world. The TEDxRenfrewCollingwood stage will bring unique thinkers together in a platform for sharing wisdom and experiences. It is a chance to welcome interesting people into the community and to  showcase and celebrate the dynamic ideas which exist in Renfrew-Collingwood and in Vancouver.

Acting as a hub of energy and inspiration, TEDxRenfrewCollingwood is a day-long event that brings together creators, catalysts, designers and thinkers to share their ideas worth spreading on the TEDx stage. A day of listening that invites thought, discussion and play, the TEDx talks are interspersed with activities, performances, and food worth eating. Each talk will be recorded and available for viewing via TEDxRenfrewCollingwood’s YouTube channel.

Why TEDxRenfrewCollingwood?

There are people in every community that have ideas worth sharing with the rest of the world. TEDx provides a great opportunity and platform for discovering and sharing the wealth of experience, wisdom, and great ideas that exist in Renfrew-Collingwood, the largest neighbourhood in Vancouver.  With a wildly diverse population, in a wildly diverse city, TEDxRenfrewCollingwood has the potential to bring together groups from our city who might not normally meet or interact.  It is also an opportunity to invite interesting people into the community, to share their wisdom with us.

TED is a recognized brand that avoids politics/religion/corporate agendas, crossing boundaries in gender, age, culture, and discipline, which appeals to and engages people with multiple interests in an environment that is non-threatening. The connection to the broader TED community is a resource for Renfrew-Collingwood, for team members and for attendees of our event. It connects our city with others at an international level and at a very personal one and supports the pollination of ideas and actions across cultures and borders.

Our 2014 Theme: Rock Paper Scissors

Our theme for 2014 is “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” We will present a diverse range of speakers who will relate to these topics in serious, fun and cutting-edge ways.

ROCK: Topics will include people who ground us, the planet we live on and the solid foundations for design and education.

PAPER: Topics will include communications, media and the arts, plus interesting new ideas revolving around the paper of today tablets, smart phones, touch screens and more.

SCISSORS: Topics will focus on cutting through the present and leaning into the future, what is predicted and what ideas will help us to get there with intelligence and thought. Here you will hear sharp views from sharp minds.

Our 2013 Theme: From Far to Here

With the vibrant diversity of Renfrew-Collingwood, there is an abundance of great stories and ideas just waiting to be discovered. Everyone has their own story and a unique set of experiences that led them to it. In each story, there have been difficult choices to make and different paths to take, but many have found success along the way.

We want to recognize these stories and celebrate the remarkable journey that comes with each one, to listen, learn, and be inspired by challenges and triumphs. Under our theme From Far to Here, TEDxRenfrewCollingwood is committed to sharing these deserving stories with the community, the city and the rest of the world.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives.

At a TED conference, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Three major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Vancouver, Canada, simultaneous with TEDActive, in Whistler, BC; and the TEDGlobal Conference takes place each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

On TED.com, talks from TED conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talks videos. A new TED Talk is posted every weekday. Through the Open Translation Project, TED Talks are subtitled by volunteers worldwide into more than 90 languages. Through our distribution networks, TED Talks are shared on TV, radio, Netflix and many websites.

The TEDx initiative grants free licenses to people around the world to organize TED-style events in their communities with TED Talks and live speakers. More than 5,000 TEDx events have been held, and selected talks from these events are also turned into TED Talks videos.

The annual TED Prize grants $1 million to an exceptional individual with a wish to change the world. The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. TED-Ed creates short video lessons by pairing master teachers with animators, for use in classroom instruction or independent learning.
